There's that common knowledge amongst pet owners that you should never feed your dog chocolate. But it turns out that there is more than just chocolate to keep away from your dog's diet. This is no exhaustive list on what your dog or cat cannot eat, but it will certainly guide you in the right direction.
Making it to the list of foods that your dog or cat should never eat or drink:
- Macadamia kernels (Temporary paralysis)
- Alcoholic beverages (Obvious side effects)
- Baby food (Often contains onion, that causes Anemia)
- Canned Human Food (Tuna, SPAM, baked beans can cause pancreatitis)
- Chocolate, caffeine, tea (Vomiting and diarrhoea)
- Grapes and raisins (Toxins can cause kidney damage)
- Mushrooms (Toxins can affect many body systems)
- Raw Eggs (Can cause skin and hair problems)
- Salt (Like humans this should be limited)
- Onion and garlic (Red blood cell damage that can cause Anemia)
- Avoid dairy products as they may cause diarrhoea
- Scallops (The orange part of the scallop gut can kill a dog in minutes)
There are many other side effects associated with eating some of these foods, for example,
excess salt increases shedding of a dog's fur and is bad for their general metabolism.
Cats cannot eat baby food because it may contain onion powder which is considered to be
toxic for cats.
It is important to control your pet's diet and watch what they are eating to avoid
sickness, intoxication or death.
