Is there Medicare for pets?

We are lucky in Australia that we can always go to a public hospital emergency room if we have to and the government pays the bill (funded through our taxes, of course).

There are approximately 6 million dogs and cats in Australia, but there is no such thing as Medicare for pets. If you have a pet that becomes sick or is injured, you will need to pay for all the costs of treating your pet out of your own pocket. That's why pet insurance is so important—we share in the cost of treatment with you, so you only have to pay 25% of your vets bills.

Also if your pet is injured and it is after normal business hours, it's not always easy to know where to take them, so we've compiled a list of 24 hour Emergency Animal Hospitals for you. Remember that they aren't public hospitals, but if you've taken out dog insurance or cat insurance with 1300 Insurance then you can sleep soundly, knowing that you'll only have to pay for 25% of the cost of treatment.

The fine print: There are some limits. We won't pay for your vet bills for conditions that were present before you took out a policy. To view the complete list of illnesses and treatments covered, as well as any exclusions that might apply, you must download and read the Product Disclosure Statement.
